Funds Distribution

Centre County United Way invites its donors to become volunteers for the funds distribution process, making recommendations for how to allocate contributions from the annual campaign.

The funds distribution process involving more than 100 community volunteers ensures that agencies are fairly represented and that money raised is given by consensus according to level of need. In this citizen review process, panels of 9 to 11 members conduct site visits to our 40 partner agencies, touring their facilities, hearing oral presentations by leadership and often clients. This exercise allows volunteers to have an accurate understanding of what each agency does to serve those in need in the community, and to make recommendations during the final allocation meeting.

"Community volunteers spend countless hours to understand the various agencies we serve in order to best allocate the money raised during the campaign," said George Downsbrough, funds distribution chair. "Through their efforts we’re able, as a team, to fully comprehend the scope of services needed by individuals and families, and the value of this support to the community."

Funding decisions made in this way are an example of the United Way’s emphasis of flexibility and responsiveness toward changing community needs. The United Way process of fundraising and distribution through primarily volunteer efforts ensures that 88 cents of every dollar raised goes back into the community to provide service.

Becoming a United Way funds distribution volunteer is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the community, and the needs of many vital local programs.
