UNITED WAY REACHES GOAL

State College, PA, February 2, 2010 –
Community members, volunteers, donors and agency representatives all celebrated as the Centre County United Way unveiled its 2009 Campaign total of $2,150,226. The announcement was made to more than 250 Centre County volunteers, donors, and friends at the Campaign Finale Celebration held Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, sponsored by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, a NiSource Company.

“We needed some extra help late in the campaign to secure the vital programs of our partner agencies, said Centre County United Way Campaign Chair Tom McKee in describing surpassing the 2009 campaign goal of $2,150,000.00. “Our campaign volunteers and the thousand who gave realized that falling short of our goal, was not an option and answered the call. These dollars will translate into needed services to our neighbors throughout the County.”

The Centre County United Way’s campaign began to take shape last summer, as several companies worked together as pacesetters before the kickoff reception in September. Pacesetter companies including the 40 United Way Agencies and United Way staff campaign raised $648,695 which gave the community campaign a solid foundation.

The Penn State United Way campaign raised $896,354 which includes dozens of special event fundraisers such as Trash to Treasure, and the Penn State United Way Golf Tournament in addition to employee payroll deduction and retiree gifts.

In addition to the unveiling of the campaign dollars raised, some special awards were presented. The Centre County United Way presented The Leon R. Kneebone Award for Extraordinary Volunteerism to a distinguished long-time volunteer; Lloyd Rhoades.

The Barbara and James Palmer Award for Extraordinary Philanthropy was presented to Mimi Barash Coppersmith, for her continuous giving to Centre County United Way as well as many other community arts and human service organizations.

Colonel Gerald F. Russell, Chair of the Centre County United Way PNC Bank Day of Caring since its inception 16 years ago, was the first recipient of an inaugural award in his name.  In recognition and gratitude for Col. Russell’s tireless efforts and leadership, The Gerald F. Russell Award will hereafter be bestowed annually, as deserved, to a volunteer, company, or organization that has demonstrated long-term and extraordinary service, support and leadership for the Day of Caring.

The Centre County United Way funds 40 health and human service organizations throughout the county, described online at www.ccunitedway.org.
