Volunteer Opportunities

"We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."
- Winston Churchill

The Centre County United Way is a volunteer-led organization.   Volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, lead working committees that drive policy, staff geographic campaign units, present information about the United Way to employee groups, determine how money raised is distributed, and staff special events. Their common focus is to make our community a better place to live. They are assisted by four paid staff members who administer day-to-day operations.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • United Way Unit Volunteers recruit employee group participation with United Way during annual campaign, August through December.  Volunteers will be trained to approach companies for their support of United Way through 1) a presentation to employees that may lead to commitments to United Way via payroll deduction 2) a corporate gift and 3) working with companies to develop special event fundraisers.
  • Fund Distribution: Volunteers participate with a group panel to visit a few United Way organizations to help determine appropriate funding.
  • Office Volunteers assist in the United Way office on an as-needed basis with general office work, including help with mailings, phone calls, data entry, and more.
  • Trash to Treasure Sale: Volunteers help during the month of May on the Trash to Treasure Stadium Sale (held Memorial Day Saturday), by retrieving donated items from Penn State residence areas, sorting and preparing items for re-sale, and working the day of the event. For more info:  Trash to Treasure Sale
  • PNC Bank- Day of Caring Volunteers donate a day of service for improvement projects throughout the county on the first Thursday of October. For more info:  PNC Bank-United Way Day of Caring
